Now for some movies (?)

.
I saw this one yesterday and consider it to be one of the greatest surprise lately ; didn't knew much about any of the cast or crew (except the fact that Mena Suvari is certainly one the young american actress 'I love to hate' the most.. was great in Six Feet Under and American Beauty. Used to play very annoying yet complex characters you would empathize with but simply can't. And Stuart Gordon's Edmond I heard about but did not see it. Well now I will...)
.
THE PLOT : A young woman commits a hit-and-run, then finds her fate tied to her victim.
.
Yeah right.. THAT is evasive.. But i don't want to spoil it anyway.
That's very much black comedy, horror flick yet deep into realism, hand-helded camera shots..
That's only 80 minutes, dense, full, great actors. Great suspens.
You should give it a try !
.
.
.
.
Then a great document about the 2000 Presidential election in the US : begins with the election on 7 November and ends with the Supreme Court ruling which stopped the Florida election recount on 12 December.
.
This 'HBO movie' won 3 Emmies :
1/ Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries (which went to Jay 'Austin Powers' Roach. Sydney Pollack was set to direct it but had to be excused because of his death)
2 / Outstanding 'Made for Television' Movie
3 / Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Movie.
And deserved those !
.
Some criticized the movie for its mixture of fact with fiction but eh well.. That's just a point of view on some facts and Jay Roach, well aware of that, stated in response that the film, "wasn't 100 percent accurate, but it was very true to what went on. . . . That's what dramatizations do : stitch together the big ideas with, sometimes, constructs that have to stand for a larger truth."
.
Plain and honest.
.
And that's an horror show really.. Thinking that America is the leader of worldwide economy (and finance .. thanks a bunch fellows..) and that being a fact, that its leader election could change the face of the world for decades to come..
HORROR when you know that this election (in Florida anyway..) was about knowing if they should recount only real holes in the bulletins and/or pinpricks too.. (Old people - when in your voting booth, please press harder ! -).. Should they consider a medium-pin-push on the paper a 'real intent to vote for someone' ?! Or not ?! when Bush's victory in Florida was from about 1,800 votes (beofre recount), out of a total of over 6,000,000, putting those old f*** manual voting machines is HORROR.. And not knowing for a fact WHO WON is real horror too..
.
No need to cut throats to make horror.. (2008 Palme d'Or 'Entre Les Murs' (i saw 5 days ago) is much much much horrific by the way. It got THE PALME D'OR, it has to, c'mon)
.
It features a bunch of great actors (Kevin Spacey, Tom Wilkinson, John Hurt), nice directing & editing (good rhythm) and provides some real enlightenment about this situation, much precise as the europeean medias could have reported about it at the time.. You won't get closer to THE truch (this show isn't a documentary.. well, that's A SHOW basically..) but 'll certainly get closer to some kind of truth that makes sense.
.
And it's rather funny.. When republican Laura 'Katherine Harris' Dern (who's basically in charge of the election legitimacy in the state of Florida), in the eye of the hurricane, says ingenuously : 10 years ago, I was teaching the chicken dance to seniors, and now I've been thrust into a political tempest of historical dimensions..
.
You kinda laugh.
Kind of.
Horror laugh.
.
.
.
.
Now for some good thrills. From some characters you care about.
.
" 2 hit men cool-off away from the UK in Bruges after awry job in London : Ken (Brendan Gleeson, awesome) the old hand, enjoys and embraces the medieval feel of the belgian city, with a fatherly attitude toward Ray (Colin Farrell, usually not a fan, but wery good too in it), young, bored, confused about the absurdity of the whole she-bang "
.
And then some happens..
.
This movie is currently in the TOP 250 on imdb (#241..) , between 'La Dolce Vita' and 'Rocky'..
.
Couldn't be better !
.
Enjoy it too !
.
.
.
And buy DVDs sometimes, at least for small-budgeted flicks............
.
Hope you liked this post ;-)

Hey there mate...don't ask me how I came to arrive at your blog but it was on one of those 'I'll search til' I'm blue in the face' escapades I find myself on a lot...using some obscure search terms that included rapidshare and science fiction I think, amongst other words...
Anyway so glad I did because you have definitely given me great ideas for a good movie to sit down to tonight!
That film, Stuck...I hadn't heard of it until now so thanks for the heads up!
Just found some links to In Bruges now too so that's another one I'm looking forward to.
So erm, if you fancy doing another post about movies, I'll be here asap!
Cheers,
