Hachirou Aoyama - Super Express 109 (1975)

Now, back to the 70s, the funk, the grooves, the Hammond, the Phasers, the neat violins and the Breaks !

They said it couldn't happen... But for 1500 passengers Bullet Train 109 became a nightmare journey that just couldn't be stopped!
=> Plot ? Criminals plant a bomb on a high-speed train. It will explode when the train slows down, unless a ransom is paid.
Simple.

This soundtrack is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

01 - Prologue - Dawn
02 - The Beginning of a Long Day
03 - Okita's Thoughts
04 - Beginnings
05 - Main Title

1'06 - 41 tracks - lots of short cues.. A MUST HAVE !

Nothing much to say about Hachirou Aoyama unfortunately.. I guess he's another supa yet forgotten musician.. He's credited for working on 8 soundtracks, between 1973 and 1978.

Toshirô Mayuzumi -- japanese soundtracks guru

Now for some 60s japanese soundtracks.

Some of the work of Toshirô Mayuzumi (1929-1997), composer of around 100 soundtracks, from early 50s to early 80s.

Best known for the score of John Huston's 'Reflections in a Golden Eye' in 1967 and 'The Bible: In the Beginning' in 1966

Initially researching european avant-garde and exp electronic music, he soon turned (as a film composer) to a more classical way to compose.

Furthermore, he took the time to conceptualize around 50 orchestral, wind band pieces and opera works.

Quite impressive.

Toshirô Mayuzumi - Black Sun (1963)
01 - Scene A
02 - Scene A2
03 - Scene B
04 - Scene C
05 - Scene D
06 - Scene E2
07 - Scene E3
08 - Scene F2
09 - Scene G
10 - Scene H

=> 100% jazz. classy and lounge. yet unusual ; track for Scene E2 is 10'36 cue. The next one is 8'28. Nice breaks. Great performers in this.

Toshirô Mayuzumi - The Bible: In the Beginning (1966)
01 - Creation of Adam
02 - Creation of Eve
03 - Cain and Abel
04 - Noah's Ark
05 - 40 Days and 40 Nights
06 - New Beginning
07 - Intermission
08 - Tower of Babel
09 - Abraham - Scene of Love
10 - Sodom
11 - Finale
12 - Theme from The Bible

=> orchestral works. Very much like a classy mid-60s should sound imo. It's good.

Finally, a compilation : Works of Toshirô Mayuzumi
01 - Theme - Waltz (1969)
02 - Crazy Society (1957)
03 - The Naked General (1958)
04 - Yuka (1964)
05 - Burning Flames (1964)
06 - Conflagration (1958)
07 - Nyanchan (1959)
08 - When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (1960)
09 - Street of Shame (1956)
10 - Hateful Beast (1962)
11 - You Can Succeed Too - Takuramakan (1964)
12 - Being a Woman (1958)
13 - Olympic Flame Relay - Arrival - Marathon Finale (1964)

=> to get the feel of his late 50s strks

If you find any of his electronic works, pliiz let me know :

* Boxing (1954)
* X, Y, Z (1955)
* Music for Sine Wave by Proportion of Prime Number (1955)
* Music for Modulated Wave by Proportion of Prime Number (1955)
* Invention for Square Wave and Saw-tooth Wave (1955)
* Variations on Numerical Principle of 7 (1956 with Makoto Moroi)
* Aoi no ue (1957)
* Campanology for multi-piano (1959)
* Olympic Campanology (1964)
* Mandala for solo voice and electronic sounds (1969)

I'm pretty sure i'll love 'em.........

Toshiaki Tsushima - Army Of The Apes (Saru no gundan, 1974) (tv soundtrack)

Here's a MAJOR soundtrack by Toshiaki Tsushima, 70s 80s japanese soundtrack composer.

Best know for his work on Gekitotsu! Satsujin ken (The Street Fighter) in 1974 :

directed by Shigehiro Ozawa with Sonny Chiba.

And :
The Green Slime directed by Kinji Fukasaku. A great SF movie in which a crew of "i'm paying the rent right now, honey" american actors are terrorized by one-eyed tentacle monsters.

Today we'll focus on the Ape-mania spreading to the Far East in the mid-70s : we are nearly 2 years after the release of 'Conquest of the Planet of the Apes' (june 72) and Tsuburaya Productions released their own Ape-based tv series. It ran 26 episodes, 25 minutes each.

You'll have to trust me on this one, the soundtrack is MUCH better than the series itself.. (not to be confused with the american one btw..)
=> It simply goes from a 'horns and marching bands' Morricone feel to a 'more-orchestrated & sound fx'd' Jerry Goldsmith one.. Very nicely produced. Songs sung in japanese.

That's 1h15 for 56 cues.

And that's ***** / *****

Toshiaki Tsushima - 01 - Main Title (Army of the Apes)
Toshiaki Tsushima - 02 - Monkey Army (TV Size)
Toshiaki Tsushima - 03 - Sub Titles
Toshiaki Tsushima - 04 - Encounter with the Monkeys
Toshiaki Tsushima - 05 - Action Start
Toshiaki Tsushima - 06 - Cold Sleeve
Toshiaki Tsushima - 07 - To the Ape World
Toshiaki Tsushima - 08 - Battle Without Honor
Toshiaki Tsushima - 09 - The Last Retake
Toshiaki Tsushima - 10 - Troop Gathering
Toshiaki Tsushima - 11 - Battle Impossibility
Toshiaki Tsushima - 12 - Mysterious Ninja Ape
Toshiaki Tsushima - 13 - Abduction of Yurika
Toshiaki Tsushima - 14 - A Moment of Peace
..
Toshiaki Tsushima - 52 - An Unknown Region
Toshiaki Tsushima - 53 - Army Big Operations
Toshiaki Tsushima - 54 - Time of the Trials
Toshiaki Tsushima - 55 - Rescue Operations
Toshiaki Tsushima - 56 - There's Love Somewhere (Record Full Size)

Feel free to ape yourself.

Nobuhiko Obayashi - Hausu (1977) -- a movie you'll never forget

This movie is incredible ; mix of film, animation, video, totally experimental. Pure barnum.

Its not gore btw.. very (VERY) graphical that's it.

I'm still looking for the soundtrack.

You'll have to dl all 8 parts and the tiny bundle which contains the english subtitles and HJsplit.

Then, join the parts (with HJsplit) and you'll end up with a 700Mb file.

Finally, play it in your fav player (GOM, bsplayer..) and add the subs.. Enjoy !

Takeo Watanabe - A few soundtracks

Born in 1933, Takeo Watanabe, mostly known for his 73-75 strks for girly animated series, went to Paris to study music composition circa 1967, then back to home country a few years later. He then started to work for TMS Entertainment and Toei.

Died in 1989, he left a rather impressive discography of around 50 strks in 20 years (including Gundam tv series and movies)

Eat It Raw - Obscure Japanese Library compilation..

As requested, here's the 'Eat It Raw' compilation.

It features top notch 1968-1973 funk and grooves from some unknown asian friends.
That's REALLY good so I'd recommended it to anyone interested in that sort of thing...

But I REALLY don't know more... found nothing on the web as well....

My private great little blue bird brought me this one a few months ago and then all the track titles and id3v2 tags were completely messed up (<> as you know and most of the time, japanese characters don't appear greatly in our europeean computers..) so i renamed the tracks into 'Track X' patterns..

The whole thing (36 tracks/100Mb) packs 6 tracks from 6 different sources (both 'official' LPs and bootlegs I presume) :

Sukeban Guerrilla
The Spiders Movie Tracks
VA - Gangland War - The World of Akira Kobayashi
VA - Nikkatsu New Action - 1968 to 1971
VA - Nikkatsu New Action - Stray Cat Rock
VA - Teppoudama No Bigaku - The World Of Sadao Nakajima

'Stray Cat Rock' rings a bell ... I'll have to research more...

Anyway, over here for some deep asian grooves!

Feel free to pass the knowledge along in the comments if you can!

ThX
